Hi, Found an old 1981 letter that's been waiting for an address so I can send it to Carlita Hatzenpillar. The last I knew she, also known as Ace, her ex-husband Toby, their oldest son a firey redhead we all called Red, and daughter Wendy, were living in Grants Pass. We all spent many fun times in Cardiff by the Sea, where I later raised a family and on Palomar Mountain. Sure would be great to locate Ace. Any help would be appreciated. e-mail me, but add Ace or Grants Pass to subject line or you're deleted quicker than a wink of the eye. Nice to have this connection to your beautiful area of Oregon. Thanks

I left GP in late 1992 and moved to the heart of Dixie...big mistake! I was hoping to see some real estate ads to get an idea of prices either for sale or lease...I may decide to move back. I don't think GP is a great place for senior, single women, but I'm somewhat independent so it probably wouldn't bother me to be shunned. The natural beauty of the area makes up for the lack of community cordiality.

My mother and I were looking for government grants and happened to stumble across your website. We've checked out some of your links and found Grants Pass to be very interesting. My mom says she's going to tell my Dad to take a family vacation (and we live all the way in VA...way to go mom...)!! But mom says you need to experience different places in the world. By the way, my Mom's a Mary-Kay consultant. If anyone wants to visit her website, please feel free to go to www.marykay.com/SandyM. Thanks!! You're town is really quite interesting!! God Bless America!

I like living in Grants Pass. Moved here 3 months ago, and now live with my mother. For the pass 3 years I've been driving here from Portland to visit, but the drive is too much, and my Mom is getting older and can't handle me leaving each time. If you could e-mail me with information on a place that I could park my 36 foot 5th wheel RV that would help. There are too many RV parks in town that are scared of strangers and want too much personal information. Thanks

Tina, i believe that a single mother with 3 children in ANY city would have difficulty with money. Really, in this case, it is not the economy of Grants Pass that is causing the problem at hand. I was born in Grants Pass and believe that it is a great place to be raised. That is, if monetary concerns are of no value to the individual. However, when speaking in terms of the cities economic development... This town,is for the most part, a retirement community.

I have lived in Grants Pass all my life. I love it here, but I agree with some of the people who wrote in this guest book. You can't make a living here. I am a single mother raising 3 girls and struggle every day. And if I could afford it, I would get out of here and find a place I could make it. For my childrens sake.

I was in the Army stationed at Ledward Barracks in 1976-1977.
I was a part of the 3rd Inf. Div. 2nd 39th field artillery unit.
It has been my understanding that the barracks are still there, but no Arny units are there. Like most young military men I left behind a bueatiful young women behind. I have thought of her for years. I had an address, but I can't afford to travel there and see here. Would'nt that be something.

While I think this is one neat place to live, we also have some unresolved probles that need to be delt with. Take for instance the story of Brian and Ruth Christine story. I would like to give account of the situation that I, my wife Ruth and our four children have encountered in Grants Pass. For background, Ruth and I both finished college degrees in England and the United States respectively. We have worked various professional jobs and started a few businesses. In 1998 we decided to sell our home, and live on the road. We bought a small bus and converted it into living space suitable for our family. We took several trips in our rolling home to see how it would take with us and our daughters. Turned out we all loved it! The desire for freedom of the open road is something that seems to be in our blood now. Ruth home schools our daughters and encourages them to participate in social functions in local communities. Bethany, our eldest daughter successfully completed the Summer Reading Program at the Grants Pass Library. Unfortunately she never got to redeem any of the certificates she won because she was confiscated by State Services to Children and Families in the library parking lot several days after her victory and the day before her fifth birthday. When we first came to Grants Pass, we were just passing through on our way north, but we soon began searching for a community where our daughters could fit in and interact with more people and be outdoors. We prayed to God about where to go and were led back to the beautiful Rogue River. We decided to stay in this area for a while and began to meet people and knit in with the community. We were given the opportunity to stay on a farm where our daughters could feed various animals and spend many happy hours playing outdoors and being home-schooled. On July 31st the unthinkable happened. The local police backed by SCF workers surrounded our motorhome and didn't leave until they had what they wanted - our three daughters. Apparently, an anonymous phone caller had complained to the police that a family was living behind the library and that a child appeared dehydrated. Indeed, our youngest was dehydrated as she was on the rebound from an illness. She had been refusing food due to her illness, but was finally eating and recovering. SCF claims that all our daughters were undernourished and just days from certain death. I wonder how Bethany made it five years with us if that were the case. Our middle daughter, age 3, also had a bandage covering a cut on her forehead. SCF immediately saw this as the perfect weapon to split up our family. The reason we live our lifestyle of travel is because we wanted to be together 100% of the time. SCF says our daughters had poor living conditions. I wonder how they knew this having never met us before. SCF alleges we tortured our daughters, starved them and beat them. SCF says they have the best interest of the child at heart, yet when questioned on the witness stand in court, not one of them had ever asked our girls where they wanted to live or what they wanted to do. We live our lifestyle according to our religious beliefs including the way we school, spend our time, spend and make our money, eat, sleep, travel, and take care of our health. SCF has violated our daughters in so many ways it sickens me to mention just a few here. Please note that not once has there been one shred of evidence or probable cause or any suggestion by any person or any of our daughters of sexual abuse yet SCF committed the following heinous acts revealed in a recent court hearing: An SCF worker took photographs of our stripped daughters' bodies and genitalia and tried to submit the photos as evidence to the court. Judge Allan Coon rejected the photos calling them pornographic. SCF also administered invasive, painful sexual examinations to our daughters over their objections. In addition, SCF violated our daughters by injecting them with live viruses, which is deeply against their religious beliefs. Another violation was placing our eldest daughter Bethany into public school, where prayer is not allowed and the mention of God is punishable. The list of violations of religious belief, personal security and basic human rights is too long for this article. SCF has a mission to "Help bring families back together". My question is, why do they break them up in the first place? Don't bother telling me that SCF does good in some cases. Ruth and I have met hundreds of people who have had the exact same experience, but are afraid to talk because they fear SCF will come and take away their children again. We, however, have nothing more to loose. The most precious thing in the world to us has already been stolen away with no proof and no due process. If you think we live in a free country, you are sadly mistaken. We have not seen our daughters since July 31st and are praying for justice from God in our case. We are told that our daughters are doing well, but why would we believe anything we are told after what has happened? Through all of this, the one good thing is it has brought people together and has strengthened our relationship to each other and to God. I pray for this city, and enjoy meeting the people of this community each day. If you meet me, you will probably see me smiling at you, because I have hope. Hope for this community, hope for the future, hope to see my daughters reunited and hope for this great country called America. God Bless you this day and forever! governmentchildtheft@hotmail.com.

I am searching for the son and/or daughter of Etta and John Criswell who lived in Grants Pass, Oregon in 1965. She was the daughter of my gggrandfather and I would like to be in contact with her children --I do not know their names. Perhaps they have the family Bible and can give me some information about the Cates family.
Thank you. Beaufer Nell Cates Farr

Greetings everyone, I have wondeful news, my friend..Artist Jan van Gogh of Holland
will be coming to Oregon. Also, I am arranging an Art Exhibit of Jan's paintings and sculpture here in Grants Pass this Fall. Keep your eyes in the Daily Courier for dates and location, you won't want to miss it. In the year 1889, Vincent van Gogh painted Starry Night which I call Valley of Dreams, in a poem I wrote. I've asked Jan if he would paint pictures in our Valley (where love still dwells in America) he replied, I'am packing my brush, my paints, and my easel."Yes..., my friend van Gogh.., is coming to Oregon".

Hi All, I grew up in Grants Pass, 74-81, out on Fish Hatchery Road. My family still lives there. I hope to retire there someday, but have to save up the money first. I love Grants Pass, there is no other place like it. If anyone knows where I can purchase a Grants Pass Caveman sweatshirt, please let me know. (I went to HVHS and I already have one of those shirts)I'll be up there in 1 1/2 weeks for our 20 year, ouch, reunion. I intend to try and buy a shirt then. Also, does anyone know where the reunion is??

I haven't lived in GP since I was 2 1/2 years old, which was over 40 years ago and I still miss the place! Tony Bennett left his heart in San Francisco--I left mine in Oregon! It literally colours my thoughts of all the places I've lived in. Although I love Canada and love living here, it's just not the same as living there.
I'm looking for relatives of mine. Ray and Pearl Zerr (my uncle and aunt) had a gorgeous ranch outside GP and I'd love to come back and see it (if it hasn't been incorporated into the city!). Their children were Evon and Gary. Unfortunately, we lost touch many years ago after my dad (Ray's brother) died and I'd really like to re-establish family ties. If there are any Zerrs there or anyone who knows what happened to my family, please email me.
I'm hoping to come back this summer or fall (2001) so I'm trying to get all the information I can before I leave here.
Up in Canada, we hear many wonderful things about Oregon, especially about how your state is ahead of many others in progressive attitudes and actions. Please keep it up! Keep your pride in your area and keep it beautiful!

I was just out visiting my Uncle in Grants Pass over Mothers day weekend. The last time I was in Grants Pass was when I was 8, lets just say quite some time ago. It is still as nice as I remember it. I wish I could drop everything and move. The community you have in Grants Pass is amazing. I have NEVER met such nice friendly people. Everyone in the surrounding areas are very friendly also. Two things I would like to mention is : One: we stayed at Flery Manor B&B owned by Marla and John. Thye have a amazing home and treated us like royalty! Second: I would like to say something about the Royal Gardens Health and Rehabilitation home my Aunt and Uncle are in. I have never seen a home like this one. It is spottlessly clean, and the entire staff is truly amazing. I can very much rest assured that my Aunt and Uncle have THE BEST care at this facility. You guys really have a class act going on there. And I will end on this note, I grew up in South Florida and I never knew nice friendly people exsisted in such a mass number. I only wish that all communities could be the way Grants Pass is. Hopefully I will be back for a visit this summer with my husband and two small children.

I am looking for historical information about your town. In particular, I am looking for a photographer or photography studio named The Picture Mill that operated out of Grant's Pass, Ore. at the turn of the century. They specialized in photography of the opening of the West. They also photographed indigenous peoples throughout the western U.S. I think they might also have been hired by some of the Indian schools to photograph students. Are there any oldtimers in Grant's Pass that might remember this outfit? I am looking to find information on a photograph from the 1900's.

Hello GPO ( Grants Pass, Oregon )
I got out of the Army in 1976 and landed in Grants Pass because my Wife Susie Walker was raised in Grants Pass which I think that she graduated from the Caveman School in 1967. I got a Job at Litton GCS in 1976 and stayed in GPO until Litton closed and had to relocate to SLC Utah ( ugh ) in 1994.I guess you could say that I was a long time citizen of Grants Pass. I attend College for 5 Yrs at the Rogue Community and got my Degree in Criminal Law and also became a County Reserve Deputy Sheriff for 8 yrs. I got to know many people of Grants Pass and of the Josephine County. If you know me...Hello as I miss Grants Pass and all the people. I most likely will retire to a home on the Rogue River but that will depend if my Wife has made some opportunity decision. I say hello to good friends named FRITZ SMITH and another friend who was the Sheriff named DAN CALVERT. I also miss my adopted family who are Vicki Buck, Mick Buck, Patti Holmbeck, Will Holmbeck, Mike Walker, and my Mom Mae Walker and Dad Virgil Walker. If you read this and You know these Folks...tell them that I said to read this Site. My Wife Susie is living in Grants Pass and she works at her sisters Pizza place. If anyone is thinking of a place to Live.."Its the Climate" ( Grants Pass ) is the city to relocate too as the weather is beautiful...even in the winter...and the people are great. It is not a mad city like SLC or NYC..It is crowded at times but nothing compared to the big city. If you want mountains...It does not take you long to get there. The River was my favorite as I enjoyed Rafting. Anyway, it is my pleasure to identify Grants Pass as prior to my 19 Yrs living in GPO, I never heard of this place. I heard of Medford and finally Grants Pass over the years has gotten recognized and I see it on Maps of the USA and Oregon Maps. If you ever travel thru SLC..whether You know me or not,,,,You can call me @ 801 965 6972 or write me before you leave Grants Pass. email: berryt@littongcs.com I am listed in the phone book as well. I forgot to mention that I have two sons that graduated from Grants Pass High and their names are Scooter Berry and Burton Berry. My older boy lives with me in SLC, Utah and I got him a Job at Litton as well. My youngest boy lives in Portland going to College and I pray that he relocates to SLC along with my WIfe Susie. I guess that before I get too old....I should make a trip to Grants Pass.... It has been nice talking to whoever takes the time to read this legend of Tom Berry. Just an another note...Litton just was sold to Northrup/Grumman Corporation and will be fianlized next week. I may be out of a Job and may return to Grants Pass sooner than I thought. I really wish that Litton would have never left Grants Pass as that was good for the economy of the Area.
GOD BLESS to all

Lived in Grants Pass until 1972. Went to Fruitdale, Roosevelt, Highland, South Jr. High, and graduated from GPHS in 1972.
As a kid, I couldn't wait to get out of Grants Pass. I did. It took me about fifteen minutes to realise the stupidity of that wish. I would move back in a heartbeat if I could but job and family keep me here in Salem. Still, I visit whenever I can.
Grants Pass is a wonderful town. I have lived on three continents and several states since leaving and have found no place that comes close to having everything GP has to offer. Kids can whine - that's their right - but they don't have the experience to know just how good they have it...So build their skatepark, don't hassle them without good reason, and encourage them to stay. They won't regret it.
Am looking for two classmates: Robert Drake and Barbara Shaw. Anybody know their whereabouts? No urgent reason for me to get ahold of them except they were very good friends and I would like to say "Hi!"

Hi everyone! Some of you may know me and to you I say "Hello". With that said, I will say what I think about Grants Pass. I lived in GP for the last four years and I finally made my escape. I think that the area is beautiful and has potential, however the economy is ridiculous. The only way that one can make a "living" is to work in mind numbing labor jobs with no hope of advancement. I have worked in the graphics industry for 10 years and the best I could do there was minimum wage. I was on welfare to make up what I couldn't earn. When I decided to go to school I was removed from all assistance in what appeared to be an effort to keep people on the system. I finally could take it no longer and I sold everything I owned just to get away. I now make in half of a week what I was paid bi-weekly in GP. I feel that the large problem with drugs and domestic violence there also stems from the economy. Perhaps attempting to encourage people to better themselves (more than just recovery programs and counseling) can make GP a better place. This is only the tip of the iceberg as far as reasons for my leaving are concerned. I feel bad for everyone i left behind as they are all struggling to get ahead in a place that won't allow that to happen. The programs that are supposedly there to help people succeed actually have the opposite effect. I know some of these things are state programs, but they are still part of the issue. I hope that changes can be made so that GP doesn't have to be exclusively a welfare/retirement town with more teen pregnancies than the rest of the state.

My family moved a lot and I went to school in 13 different towns. Lucky for me I managed to spend 7 of those years in Grants Pass. Basically I lived in GP from 1954 to 1972, except for those five missing years. I am a 1972 grad of GPHS.
Like most kids, I couldn't wait to "get outta town" and I did as soon as I could. It took a very short time to regret it. Grants Pass is part of my makeup and I can't live without her. I visit several times a year and would move back without hesitation if it were possible.
I can't really describe why I love Grants Pass. It's something that you either know - or you don't. In other words...."If you don't understand, no explanation will suffice. If you understand, no explanation is necessary." I guess that is the definiton of HOME.

Hi. My name is Brandi Lee Pena...Formerly known as Brandi Lee Jensen. I lived in the area most of my life, starting in Selma, on Deer Creek Road. After the snow storm of '92-93, I moved to Cave Junction where I moved around quite a bit. I Moved to Grants Pass in '96 to live with my grandparents on Williams Hwy, Just outside of town. I attended Brighton Academy for three years, starting in the seventh grade and ending in the ninth. Now, I live in So. California, and I miss G.P. sooo much. I want so badly to be able to go back up there for a while, maybe even move up there for a few years. I'm trying to convince my husband. He's native to the bay area and doesn't want to leave. I just wanted to say 'hi' to all of you in the Rogue Vallley and say that you are truly lucky to be living where you are!!! Sincerely yours, Brandi Lee Pena

Greetings my Fellow Oregonians ! A year has past and I can truly say, Grants Pass has become my Valley of Dreams. If you have interest, check out my Yahoo Clubs profile > http://profiles.yahoo.com/ospro282 I've written a poem based on the life of Vincent van Gogh and his painting of Starry Night. Iam an Artist and some poetry. The beauty here and living in a Valley, is most inspiring and encouraging to create works of art. I wish to say also, I believe one day Grants Pass will become a Mecca for Artists. The warmth of the people here and sincerity..truly a Shining Light in our Country America. Vincent found his Valley of Dreams in Starry Night, I've found mine in Grants Pass, Oregon.

I was not borne in GP, I moved there with my parents after a life as a dependent in the military. Traveled the world with them and after school I joined the Army and continue to travel. I moved to GP when I was 12yr in 1967, went to Lincoln Savage JH.and then to GP high, I lived out Williams hwy, departed GP in late 74 when entering the military.
My father was a deputy in the county, Edwards was the Sheriff at the time, later served under Newby, and later my father Jim Fanning became the Sheriff of the county, GP was a town one could be most proud to call home, it was like something out of a country living magazine, like living on little house on the prairie... Now GP has kids staying out all night on the streets, Parents not caring what their kids do, a community of retired elderly or people who move in and turn the town into a typical suburban neighborhood from a big city, trashing up the town with littering snot nosed teens with no regard for the privacy of others. What happened to the GP from the ( good old days? ) one where there was respect for others was a common sight, I loved my life there as a kid, enjoying summer swims on the Applegate, or the Rogue River, living on a small ranch, knowing my neighbors personally and them knowing us, going to Grants Pass high, Wow, It was a great school to graduate from, what is it like now? I have been back to GP many, many times over the past 20+ years and hope to retire there, but more than that, hope to be apart of the community. I am now retired military, and when I return I would like to help in some way to make GP the happy family community it once was, where the streets were safe to be late at night, and kids grew up being curious about and excited about the simple birth of a pet from the farm they lived on, and not the dope, or drugs they can get their hands on to consume or sell to others. Each time I return to visit this once place I called my home, I see more and more of the things that make people sick going on.
Don't let yourselves become like what I see out here in the Eastern US, where people let the Government take over, set the laws and taxes without the consent of the people. This country is becoming a police state and the people of this country are letting it happen. The West is still new to most, compared to out here, so people of the west be constitutionally in control of our government, the community around you and your lives. Grants Pass is/was a place one could be proud to live in, lets get it back that way.
The beauty of GP is far from gone, let all try to bring it back to what once was a Courier and Ive's community

Please note that not once has there been one shred of evidence or probable cause or any suggestion by any person or any of our daughters of sexual abuse yet SCF committed the following heinous acts revealed in a recent court hearing:
An SCF worker took photographs of our stripped daughters' bodies and genitalia and tried to submit the photos as evidence to the court.

Hello GP! I gratuated in '77, the last year of the true Grants Pass High School! Nearly went to state that year as I remember. Left for navy boot camp 2 weeks after graduation, and never came back, not that I don't want to, but I decided to earn a living vs. welfare. Too many good memories on the Rogue, Applegate, Illinois rivers, Oregon Coast, and beer parties at various housing developments - what a frikkin' drag it's become to go back on "vacations" now. Well, I guess nothing stays the same, I've certainly seen Spokane change over the past few years. LONG LIVE THE CAVEMAN!!!!!

Hey, still a great site. Nice to see some familiar landmarks. I lived in GP for 21 years, now living in Gevenich Germany (near Luxembourg) I love Europe, but sometimes miss the Rogue Valley. I visit from time to time, but I plan on staying on this side of the Ocean.
